Winner: Blackout by Sharron Mirsky

The subject offers a perfect vehicle for animation, with its warm and sympathetic depiction of a minor human drama treated simply but very effectively.

Highly Commended: CHOPPER by FREDERIK PALMAERS AND LARS DAMOISEAUX

A highly accomplished, technically excellent and beautifully simple film.

Special Mentions

Astigmatismo by Nikolai Troshinsky

Drunker Than a Skunk by Bill Plympton

Best Student Film

Winner: The Dewberry Empire by Christian Schlaeffer

The wonderful cinematography, characterisation and storytelling in The Dewberry Empire combined to capture a unique moment in time. A glimpse into the emotional extremes and limitless possibilities of a childhood world contained within a summer afternoon.

Special Mention: THE KIOSK by ANETE MELECE

Beautifully observed, impeccably structured with an engaging witty narrative.

Best Music Video

Winner: Autour du Lac by Noemie Marsily and Carl Roosens

This video really stood out from the others. The jury felt it was innovative, with spontaneous drawings capturing the experimental and discordant nature of the song.

Special Mention: KILLER MIKE, ‘REAGAN’ by DANIEL GARCIA AND HARRY TEITLEMAN

The jury felt there was a real synergy between the driving music and the powerful graphic style.

Best Commercial

Winner: Rollin’ Safari by Kyra Buschor, Anna Habermehl and Constantin Paeplow

A well executed idea with a simple and effective use of CGI resulting in great characterisation in a series of hilarious visual gags.

Special Mention: PLAN INTERNATIONAL, ‘I’LL TAKE IT FROM HERE’ by SHONA HAMILTON, MARY MATHESON AND RAJ YAGNIK

Simple but powerful use of animation techniques and community involvement to communicate an important message.

Best Film for Children

Winner: Room on the Broom by Max Lang and Jan Lachauer

Perfect on so many levels—the rhythm, the spirit, the characterisation and technically excellent. A wonderful story—it was a joy to watch!

Best Film by Young Animators

Winner: My Bricknell by Pupils from Bricknell Primary School

The clever balance between the children’s voices and mixed media creates a moving and personal portrait of this school.

Special Mention: MErTHYR VIEWS by JANE HUBBARD

An unusual look at Merthyr as seen through the eyes of its young people. The original song gives an energy and dynamic to this lively film.
