Our Favourite Movie Sidekicks

This week, we’re starting the build up to our Enemies to Lovers Valentine’s film season with a celebration our favourite sidekicks in cinema.

We’re talking about the unsung heroes of your favourite romcoms and dramas, the platonic glue which holds the films together. From Oscar nominees to kindly volleyballs, this list has it all.

Tom – Cinema Marketing Officer

Philip Seymour Hoffman as Sandy in Along Came Polly—Oscar-nominated legend and, it turns out, slapstick genius!

Hattie – Public Programme Developer

Cameron Frye from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. It’s easy to think this film is all about Ferris, but it’s Cameron’s day off too.

Jack – Screen Programme Producer

Sam in The Lord of the Rings. The GOAT, the main man, he literally carries Fro-bro on his back for most of the films on top of cooking all his meals. It’s slanderous to include anyone else alongside this man.

Nathan – Screen Programme Producer

Wilson in Castaway. If you don’t have a wingman, make your own. The most heartbreaking character arc of an inanimate object every portrayed on-screen.

Bex – Screen Programme Manager

The Genie from Aladdin. Because the best kind of wingman comes with three wishes…

Sal – Head of Screen and Cultural Engagement

Dennis Hopper as Clifford Worley in True Romance. A key part of one of the best scenes ever with Christopher Walkden and he sacrifices himself for his son’s relationship!

Cathy – Marketing Manager

The teenagers that grown-up Jenna befriends in 13 Going on 30; no drama, no ditching the best friend for the boy, just girls supporting girls, gossiping and lip syncing to Pat Benetar.

Vicky – Visitor Insight Manager

Shrek and Fiona would be nothing without Donkey.

Joel – Customer Service Assistant

Nicholas Hoult as Marcus from About a Boy does a questionable job as Hugh Grant’s wingman, but is hilarious none the less.

Tom – Cinema Manager

Why have just one wingman when you can have two wingmen,  wingmanning each other simultaneously! It has to be Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You, still the greatest romantic comedy of all time—conveniently screening on Valentine’s Day at Pictureville.
