It’s Australia Day 2013—Toni Booth delves into our collection to mark 225 years since the First Fleet landed in Sydney Cove in 1788.
It’s only early afternoon here in Bradford, but as the day draws to a close on the other side of the world, our friends in the South Pacific are celebrating their biggest annual public holiday, marking 225 years since the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. It’s Australia Day!
I asked Associate Curator Toni Booth to pull together a set of photographs from our collection to honour the occasion. It’s a mixed bag, but a rather interesting one I think you’ll agree. I love the albumen and salt prints circa 1855 by Walter Bentley Woodbury, who sailed from England to Australia in the 1850s. It would be fascinating to compare Woodbury’s photographs of Australia with the modern-day towns—perhaps someone can help us out on Flickr, where you can see the full Australia Day set.
